Rahul Gandhi slams BJP: SC verdict exposes patronage to criminals in Bilkis Bano case

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed strong criticism against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the Supreme Court's decision to annul the Gujarat government's remission to 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case. The apex court ruled that the state government abused its power, ordering the convicts, responsible for the gang-rape and murder during the 2002 riots, to return to jail within two weeks.

Rahul Gandhi, in a post on 'X', asserted that the verdict showcased who provides "patronage to criminals" in the country, emphasizing the dangerous implications of compromising justice for electoral gains.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court highlighted that the Gujarat government's remission order lacked proper consideration, questioning whether heinous crimes against women permit remission, regardless of the victim's faith or creed. Bilkis Bano, a survivor of the 2002 riots, endured the gang-rape while fleeing the communal violence, symbolizing a tireless struggle for justice.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hailed the SC judgment, removing the veil over BJP's anti-women policies, according to her 'X' post. The Congress party, echoing similar sentiments, deemed the verdict historic and exposed the BJP government's "disgusting" treatment of women in Gujarat.
